Position Highlights

The Tardiff Laboratory in the Department of Biomedical Engineering is accepting applications for a temporary Research Professional I.

The Research Professional I will work primarily on protein analysis and TR-FRET. This position will have some lab management responsibilities overseen by the Principal Investigator (PI). The studies in the Tardiff laboratory utilize an integrative physiologic and biophysical approach to delineate the underlying links between structural and functional alterations in cardiac thin filament proteins and the resultant complex cardiovascular phenotypes observed in patients with Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM), a disorder affecting 1/500 individuals. Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy is an autosomal dominant genetic disorder and is one of the most common causes of sudden cardiac death in young people.

This is a temporary position not expected to last more than six months.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Under the supervision of Dr. Tardiff assist with developing, planning, designing, and conducting advanced multi-disciplinary research in hypertophic cardiomyopathy.
  • Assist with reviewing progress and evaluating results.
  • Participate under supervision in formulating research methods, and developing or collaborating in the development of new techniques, methods, and equipment.
  • Maintain clear, detailed laboratory notebooks with experimental procedures, calculations, and data.
  • Support communication with collaborators and core facilities outside of the department and college.
  • Perform basic molecular biology, western blotting, and protein purification.
  • Operate laboratory equipment and assist with performing minor equipment maintenance.
  • Assist Dr. Tardiff with instructing junior graduate students and undergraduates.
  • Support communication with collaborators and core facilities outside of the department and college.
  • Communicate with service technicians for major equipment repairs or service.
  • Assist with and contribute to deriving, analyzing, and formatting data for publications, presentations, and grant proposals. 
  • Participate under supervision in research funding and grant proposal preparations as needed.
  • Present research findings to the lab at department meetings and national symposiums. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and work well with others.
  • Ability to analyze and summarize large data sets using computing and /or statistical tools.
  • Basic computer skills: MS Office, Excel, Word, Power Point.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through experience required.
  • 1 year of relevant work experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field of study.
  • Experience with principles and techniques of molecular and cell biology.
  • Experience with word processing and data presentations skills (e.g., using programs such as Word, Excel, Prism).
